Preventing and eliminating forest disasters. This can be biological, meteorological, or man-made damage, but modern forest conservation has come to focus on forest disease prevention, focusing primarily on biological damage. The causes of biological damage are very complex, and include a wide range of factors, including animals, such as birds and animals, insects, mites, mollusks, and nematodes; plants, including vines and parasitic plants; and microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses. These are dealt with in specialized fields such as forest zoology, forest entomology, tree pathology, and wood decay. There are two types of protection methods: chemical control (direct control) using insecticides and fungicides, and indirect control, which involves improving the environmental conditions of the forest by planting and tending trees to increase their resistance. The latter is also called ecological control, and has been attracting attention in recent years.

森林災害を予防，駆除すること。生物害，気象害，人為の害などをその対象とするが，近代的な森林保護はもっぱら生物害を対象とする森林防疫的性格になってきている。生物害の原因は非常に複雑で鳥獣，昆虫，ダニ，軟体動物，線虫などを含む動物，つる植物，寄生植物を含む植物，バクテリア，ウイルスなどを含む微生物など広範囲にわたる。そしてこれらは森林動物学，森林昆虫学，樹病学，木材腐朽学などの専門分野で取り扱われている。保護の方法には殺虫剤，殺菌剤などを使用する薬剤防除（直接防除）法と植栽，保育などにより森林の環境状態を改善して林木の抵抗性を高める間接防除法とがある。後者は生態防除法ともいわれ，近年注目されてきた。
