Nangarhar is the capital of Nangarhar Province in eastern Afghanistan. It is located 177 km east-southeast of Kabul, the capital, on the right bank of the Kabul River. It is a key transportation and trade point on the road from Peshawar in Pakistan to Kabul via the Khyber Pass. It was built in 1560 by Akbar the Great of the Mughal Empire, and became part of Afghanistan in 1834. It is a strategic point controlling the Laghman and Konar valleys, and serves as a military garrison and has an airfield. It is surrounded by vast irrigated plains, and is a distribution center for fruits, almonds, rice, and other grains, and also has a sugar factory. Modernization is underway, with water facilities and road paving. Most of the inhabitants are the Patan ethnic group. Population: 68,100 (1988 estimate).
