This is the morphogeneric name given to the leaves of the reed plant ( Calamites ), a representative articulated plant of the late Paleozoic era. Reed plants are the ancestors of the modern horsetails, with huge stems up to 20cm in diameter. The branches that emerge from the joints also have joints, and the leaves that grow in whorls at those joints are single-veined and 1-5cm in size. Because plant fossils are discovered in pieces such as leaves and stems, each part is given a different name. [Asama Kazuo] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
