Setsubunsou (Setsubun grass) - Setsubunsou (English spelling) Eranthis pinnatifida
A small perennial plant of the Ranunculaceae family. It is distributed in Honshu from the Kanto region westward, and grows in the shade of trees on the mountains. There is a spherical tuber underground, from the top of which stems and leaves grow, and fibrous roots grow from the bottom. The basal leaves have thin petioles 5 to 10 cm long, and the almost pentagonal leaf blade is deeply lobed into three parts, the lateral parts are further deeply lobed into two parts, and each lobe is pinnately incised. In spring, very early, a sessile leaf (involute) deeply lobed in several places appears at the top of the stem, and a single white flower 2 cm in diameter appears at the top of the leaf. There are five large white petal-like sepals, and the petals are yellow, small, bifurcated, and have nectar glands at the base. There are many stamens with pale purple anthers. There are 1 to 5 carpels. It is named after the fact that it blooms around the time of Setsubun.
