Also called "nai kanrei." In the Kamakura period, the chief of the vassals (miuchibito) of the Tokuso family, who were the heads of the Hojo clan, the regents. As the Hojo clan's autocratic system strengthened, the miuchibito gained economic power through their control of the vast Tokuso territories, and their influence came to surpass that of the gokenin. At the end of the 13th century, during the reign of Tokuso Sadatoki, Taira no Yoritsuna was called nai kanrei for the first time and held real power in the shogunate.
