A place name on the western shore of Lake Biwa, in the northern part of Otsu City. It is said to have been developed by the Otsuki clan in the late 9th century, and Ogoto Shrine (Jinushi Gongensha) enshrines their founder, Otsuki Sukune Imao. At the beginning of the late 12th century, Ogoto Manor was seen as the property of the neighboring Hokoji Temple, and it was supposed to be ruled by the head of the Otsuki clan for all eternity, but around 1225, it was donated to Myohoin Temple, and a long dispute unfolded with the Enryakuji forces. In 1322, the Mibu family, a branch of the Otsuki clan, was recognized as the owner of the land, but in 1412, conflicts continued with the Omiya family, a relative of the Otsuki clan, and in 1481, a vassal of Omi Shugo Rokkaku Takayori invaded the area, and it came under their control. During the Sengoku period, the Wada clan was stationed in Ogoto Castle, and in 1571, Akechi Mitsuhide asked them to become his ally. During the Edo period, it was the domain of the shogunate, and later the domain of the head priest of the Shiga-in Temple. In 1919, a radium spring was discovered, and this marked the formation of a hot spring town. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
