This castle is located on the eastern shore of Lake Esrum in the northern part of Zealand, Denmark. Construction began in 1719 when Frederick IV (reigned 1699-1730) named it Fredensborg, meaning "Castle of Peace," in commemoration of the end of the Northern War of 1721. A large forest leading to the lake was added to the gardens, and the castle was remodeled throughout the 18th century, incorporating the Italian Baroque style. It is currently used as a summer residence for the royal family. [Murai Masato] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
