The city is located in the central-northern part of Kanagawa Prefecture, on the Sagamihara Plateau. The western part of the city is part of the Kanto Mountains, and the Sagami River runs through it. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. In the past, the plateau was used for mulberry fields, and sericulture and silk textile production were thriving. Before World War II, it was also a military city. From around 1960, industrial complexes were established along the Yokohama Line and Sagami Line, and industries such as electrical equipment and food were thriving, with the city's shipment value of manufactured goods reaching 1,256.6 billion yen (2003). The city is connected by the Chuo Line, Yokohama Line, Sagami Line, Odakyu Electric Railway Line, Keio Sagamihara Line, Chuo Expressway, and Ken-O Expressway, and is rapidly developing into a residential area. In addition to field crops, dairy farming is also thriving in the surrounding areas. It is home to Lake Tsukui, which was created by damming the Sagami River, and Lake Sagami, making it a popular tourist destination near the metropolitan area. In March 2006, Sagamiko-cho and Tsukui-cho in Tsukui-gun were incorporated, and in March 2007, Shiroyama-cho and Fujino-cho in Tsukui-gun were incorporated. In April 2010, it became a city designated by government ordinance. Midori-ku, Chuo-ku, and Minami-ku were established. Area: 328.66 km2 . Population: 717,544 (2010).

神奈川県中北部,相模原台地にある市。西部は関東山地の一部を占め,相模川が貫流する。1954年市制。かつては台地を桑園に利用,養蚕と絹織物の生産が盛んで,第2次大戦前は一時軍事都市でもあった。1960年ころから横浜線,相模線沿いなどに工業団地ができ,電気機器,食品などの工業が盛んで1兆2566億円(2003)の製造品出荷額を上げている。中央本線,横浜線,相模線,小田急電鉄線,京王相模原線,中央自動車道,圏央道が通じ,住宅地化が著しい。周辺部では畑作のほか酪農も盛ん。相模川をせき止めた津久井湖,相模湖があり,首都圏近郊の行楽地。2006年3月津久井郡相模湖町,津久井町を,2007年3月,津久井郡城山町,藤野町を編入。2010年4月,政令指定都市に移行。緑区,中央区,南区を設置。328.66km2。71万7544人(2010)。
