Mononobe Shrine - Mononobe Shrine

Located in Kawai-cho, Oda City, Shimane Prefecture. Umashimaji no Mikoto is enshrined here. Umashimaji no Mikoto was the son of Nigihayahi no Mikoto and the ancestor of the Mononobe clan. Following an imperial decree from Emperor Jimmu, he passed through Harima and arrived in Iwami, where he pacified the area and became its guardian. He passed away here, and later, during the reign of Emperor Keitai, his descendants built a shrine, which is said to be the founding of the main shrine. In 941 (Tenkei 4), he was ranked as a small shrine in the Engishiki, later becoming the Ichinomiya of Iwami Province. In the Middle Ages, he was protected by military commanders, and in the early modern Edo Shogunate, he received a red seal territory of 300 koku. It was designated a small national shrine by the Meiji government. The annual festival is held on October 9th. There are also many other special rituals, such as the Azuki Minie ritual on January 15th.

島根県大田(おおだ)市川合町に鎮座。宇摩志麻遅命(うましまじのみこと)を祀(まつ)る。宇摩志麻遅命は饒速日命(にぎはやひのみこと)の子で物部氏の祖。神武(じんむ)天皇の詔(みことのり)を受けて、播磨(はりま)を経て石見(いわみ)に至り、その地を平定ののち守護にあたり、当地で薨(こう)じ、のち継体(けいたい)天皇のとき、子孫が社殿を造営したのが本社の創建と伝承する。941年（天慶4）従(じゅ)四位上、『延喜式(えんぎしき)』で小社、のち石見国一宮(いちのみや)とされ、中世には武将の保護を受け、近世江戸幕府より朱印領300石を受けた。明治の制で国幣小社。例祭10月9日。ほかに1月15日の小豆御贄(あずきみにえ)神事など特殊神事が多い。
