IEEE - Internet Replicity

The abbreviation for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. It was established in 1963 by the merger of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) and the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE). Its headquarters are in New York. It is a non-profit organization with 38 societies (specialty committees) and seven technical councils (associations of related societies). In Japan, the IEEE Japan Council was established in 1999 (Heisei 11). As of June 2015, there are more than 400,000 members from over 160 countries around the world.

Its main activities include hosting international conferences, publishing journals, technical education, standardization (establishment of standards), and awards systems, and it plays a particularly large role in standardization in the fields of electrical and electronic technology, such as computers and communications. Standards that have been adopted as international standards by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) include IEEE802.1X (authentication standard for LAN connections) from the IEEE802 (communications and network standards for LANs, etc.) group, IEEE802.11 (standard for wireless LANs), IEEE802.16-2004 (WiMAX), as well as IEEE802.3 (Ethernet), IEEE802.15 (short-range wireless such as Bluetooth), IEEE1284 (parallel ports), and IEEE1394 (standard for DV terminals, including FireWire and i.LINK).

アメリカ電気電子学会Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineersの略称。1963年に、アメリカ電気学会（AIEE：American Institute of Electrical Engineers）と無線学会（IRE：Institute of Radio Engineers）が合併して発足した。本部をニューヨークに置く。38のSociety（専門部会）と七つのTechnical Council（関連するSocietyの連合）がある非営利の団体で、日本でも1999年（平成11）にIEEE日本カウンシル（IEEE Japan Council）が設立された。2015年6月時点で、世界160か国以上から40万人以上の会員が参加している。

　おもな活動としては、国際会議の開催や論文誌の発行、技術教育、標準化（規格制定）、表彰制度などがあり、とくにコンピュータや通信などの電気・電子技術分野における規格の標準化に大きな役割を果たしている。これまで国際標準化機構（ISO）により国際標準として採用された標準規格には、IEEE802（LAN(ラン)などの通信・ネットワーク規格）グループのIEEE802.1X（LAN接続時の認証規格）、IEEE802.11（無線LANの標準規格）、IEEE802.16-2004（WiMAX(ワイマックス)）をはじめ、IEEE802.3（イーサネット）、IEEE802.15（Bluetooth(ブルートゥース)などの近距離無線）、IEEE1284（パラレルポート）、IEEE1394（DV端子の規格でFireWire(ファイヤーワイヤー)やi.LINK(アイリンク)のこと）などがある。
