Shukugawa

Japanese: 夙川 - しゅくがわ

A small river that flows south through the western part of Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture. It originates near Mt. Kabuto (309m) at the eastern end of the Rokko Mountains and flows into Osaka Bay. It is 7km long. Most of the river is an elevated river, and the rows of pine and cherry trees on the high banks are known for their unique scenery, and the middle and lower reaches have been designated as river parks. Meanwhile, along with other rivers that develop alluvial fans at the foot of Mt. Rokko, the underground water is used as Miyamizu, which is essential for Nada sake brewing. The river basin was developed as a villa area (Kurakuen, Koyoen) and an amusement park (Koroen) from the end of the Meiji period when the Hankyu Kobe Line was opened to the end of the Taisho period when the Hankyu Koyo Line was opened, but now, together with neighboring Ashiya to the west, it is one of the most luxurious residential areas in the Hanshin area.

兵庫県西宮市西部を南流する小河川。六甲山地東端の甲（かぶと）山(309m)付近に発し大阪湾に注ぐ。全長7km。流路の大部分は天井川をなし，高い堤防上の松や桜の並木は独特の景観として知られ，中･下流は河川公園に指定されている。一方，六甲山麓に扇状地を発達させるほかの河川とともに伏流水は灘の酒造りに不可欠の〈宮水（みやみず）〉として利用されている。流域は阪急神戸線が開通した明治末から同甲陽線が開通した大正末にかけて別荘地(苦楽園，甲陽園)や遊園地(香炉園（こうろえん）)として開発されたが，現在では西に隣接する芦屋とともに阪神間を代表する高級住宅地となっている。
