A former town in Motoyoshi County, northeastern Miyagi Prefecture. Facing the Pacific Ocean, there are many fishing villages, including the main settlement of Isamatoe, and the cultivation of sea squirts, oysters, and wakame seaweed is thriving. Inland, rice, wheat, and soybeans are produced. On Mount Tatsukane, there are remains of Jakkoji Temple, which was built by Fujiwara Hidehira. In October 2005, it merged with Shizugawa Town, Motoyoshi County, to become Minamisanriku Town, Motoyoshi County. 39.42 km2 . 5,621 people (2003).

宮城県北東部,本吉郡の旧町。太平洋に面して主集落伊里前(いさとまえ)など漁村が多く,ホヤ,カキ,ワカメなどの養殖が盛ん。内陸では米,麦,大豆を産する。田束(たつかね)山には藤原秀衡が建立した寂光寺の跡が残る。2005年10月,本吉郡志津川町と合併し町制,本吉郡南三陸町となる。39.42km2。5621人(2003)。
