Vienne (English spelling)
A town in the Isère department in southeastern France. It is an ancient capital, river port city, and industrial city that developed on the slope of the left bank of the Rhône River, about 30 km south of Lyon. After Caesar's expedition, it developed as one of the Gallo-Roman cities. It became the capital of a region that included Burgundy and Provence, and became part of the Holy Roman Empire in 882. It was a French territory from 1349. It was the seat of an archbishopric until the French Revolution. It is a distribution center for agricultural products, and in addition to the worsted industry that has existed since the Middle Ages, mechanical and chemical industries are also active. In addition to ancient ruins such as a Roman theater (excavated in 1922), a Roman fort, and a Roman amphitheater, there are also the Basilica of St. Pierre (5th century) and the Basilica of St. Maurice. Population 30,386 (1990).
