In Catholic doctrine, the place where the souls of the dead who have committed venial sins go to be purified. It is one of the five, along with Paradise, Hell, Limbo of the Infants, and Limbo of the Fathers. The belief in purification after death was mentioned by Plato, Virgil, and others and was known from early times, but through Augustine and other Church Fathers, it gradually became established as doctrine and liturgy (prayers and mass for the dead). Luther and Calvin rejected this, but in opposition to their claims, it was finally codified as dogma at the Council of Trent (1545-63). Dante's Divine Comedy is famous for its artistic depiction of it. [Tokuyoshi Tamaru] [References] | |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
