Purgatory (English spelling) purgatorium (Latin)

In Catholic doctrine, the place where the souls of the dead who have committed venial sins go to be purified. It is one of the five, along with Paradise, Hell, Limbo of the Infants, and Limbo of the Fathers. The belief in purification after death was mentioned by Plato, Virgil, and others and was known from early times, but through Augustine and other Church Fathers, it gradually became established as doctrine and liturgy (prayers and mass for the dead). Luther and Calvin rejected this, but in opposition to their claims, it was finally codified as dogma at the Council of Trent (1545-63). Dante's Divine Comedy is famous for its artistic depiction of it.

カトリックの教義で、小罪を犯した死者の魂がその浄(きよ)めを受けるために赴く場所。パラダイス、地獄、幼児の辺獄、父祖たちの辺獄などと並ぶ五つのなかの一つ。死後の浄化の信仰は、プラトン、ベルギリウスなどにも言及され、早くから知られていたが、アウグスティヌスほかの教父を通じ、しだいに教義ならびに典礼（死者のための祈りやミサ）として定着をみるに至った。ルターやカルバンらはこれを退けたが、彼らの主張に対抗してトレント公会議（1545～63）で最終的に教義化がなされた。ダンテの『神曲』はその芸術的描写として有名である。
