Japanese: フユシャク(冬尺) - フユシャク

An insect of the Geometridae family of the Lepidoptera order. There are about 30 species in this family in Japan alone that emerge as adults only during the cold season when most insects are completely inactive, and they are given names that suffix them with the subfamily they belong to: Winter Geometridae (subfamily Pycnonotidae), Winter Geometridae (subfamily Polynomialinae), and Winter Geometridae (subfamily Ennominalinae). All emerge from late autumn through winter to early spring, with the female's wings degenerating and her body remaining on tree bark or twigs, where she releases a sex attractant and waits for the male to fly in for mating.

鱗翅目シャクガ科の昆虫。この科の中には，一般の昆虫がまったく活動を停止するような寒冷期にだけ成虫の羽化する種類が日本だけでも30種近くおり，所属する亜科の違いから，フユシャク(ホシシャク亜科)，フユナミシャク(ナミシャク亜科)，フユエダシャク(エダシャク亜科)という語尾がつけられている。いずれも晩秋から冬季を経て早春まで羽化するもので，雌の翅は退化し，樹皮や小枝上にいて，性誘引物質を放出して，交尾のため雄が飛来するのを待つ。
