Geologically, Sardinia, along with the neighbouring island of Corsica, contains areas that were already terrestrial in the Palaeozoic era. Cambrian rocks are found in the Iglesiente mountain range, where granite intrusions are found in various places. The influence of the Hercynian orogeny is widespread, but the present-day topography of Sardinia consists of several mountain massifs and plateaus separated by valleys.
