A device that is connected to a pipeline or the end of a pipeline to control the flow rate of a fluid passing through it. When a term describing its purpose or type is added, it is called a "valve," such as a globe valve or stop valve. It generally consists of a valve body that forms the body, a valve body and valve seat that change their relative positions to block or limit the flow, and a stem and handle that operate the valve body. There are a wide variety of types in terms of structure and function, and the main ones are globe valves, needle valves, butterfly valves, gate valves, stop valves, and check valves. There are also safety valves that operate when the fluid pressure exceeds a certain level, and automatic control valves with advanced automatic adjustment functions. Valves are made of bronze or cast iron for low temperature and low pressure use, cast steel for medium temperature and medium pressure use, and alloy steel for high temperature and high pressure use.

管路の途中や管端などに結合され，中を通る流体の流量などを制御する装置。用途や種類を表す言葉がつくときは，玉形弁，止め弁など〈弁〉と呼ぶ。一般に胴体をなす弁箱，相互の関係位置を変えて流れを遮断(しやだん)したり制限したりする弁体と弁座，弁体を操作する弁棒とハンドルなどからなる。構造上また機能上きわめて多種類があり，おもなものは玉形弁，ニードル弁，バタフライ弁，仕切弁，止め弁，逆止弁など。また流体の一定以上の圧力で作動する安全弁や，自動調整機能を高度化した自動制御弁などがある。弁は低温低圧用では青銅または鋳鉄製，中温中圧用では鋳鋼製とし，高温高圧用の合金鋼製などもある。
