A former town in Hioki District, central Satsuma Peninsula, Kagoshima Prefecture. Most of the area is Shirasu plateau, and in addition to livestock farming, vegetable and tea cultivation are also popular. The Kagoshima Main Line runs through the town, and many people commute to Kagoshima City to the east. In November 2004, it was incorporated into Kagoshima City along with Yoshida Town and Sakurajima Town in Kagoshima District, Kiire Town in Ibusuki District, and Koriyama Town in Hioki District. 51.05 km2 . 鹿児島県薩摩半島中部，日置郡の旧町。大部分はシラス台地で，畜産のほか，野菜・茶の栽培など畑作が盛ん。鹿児島本線が通じ，東隣の鹿児島市への通勤者も多い。2004年11月鹿児島郡吉田町，桜島町，揖宿郡喜入町，日置郡郡山町と鹿児島市へ編入。51.05km2。１万2571人（2003）。
