A former town in Hioki District, central Satsuma Peninsula, Kagoshima Prefecture. Most of the area is Shirasu plateau, and in addition to livestock farming, vegetable and tea cultivation are also popular. The Kagoshima Main Line runs through the town, and many people commute to Kagoshima City to the east. In November 2004, it was incorporated into Kagoshima City along with Yoshida Town and Sakurajima Town in Kagoshima District, Kiire Town in Ibusuki District, and Koriyama Town in Hioki District. 51.05 km2 . Population: 12,571 (2003).
