Theater researcher, theater critic, playwright, novelist. Doctor of Literature. Real name Ihara Toshiro. Born in Matsue to a family of former Matsue feudal lords. Dropped out of First High School. Joined the Nijūroku Shinpo newspaper as a theater critic, and was later invited by Tsubouchi Shoyo to edit Waseda Bungaku. In 1897 (Meiji 30), he joined the Miyako Shimbun newspaper, and served as a theater critic for the next 50 years. During that time, he presided over and edited Kabuki, which was published after the death of Miki Takeji. His novels include Gosunkugi Torakichi and Kanaya Koume, and his plays include Izumo no Okuni and Kasugayama.
