A province in central China. Its capital is Xi'an. In the south, the Daba and Qinling mountain ranges run parallel from east to west, with the Hanzhong Basin and the Ankang Plain in between. To the north of the Qinling mountain range lies the Weishui Plain, and to the north lies the Shaanbei Plateau, made of loess soil. The climate is mild and rainy in the south, but it gets colder and less rainy the further north you go. The Weishui Plain is China's oldest civilized area, and the Hanzhong Basin has long been important as a link between northern China and the Yangtze River basin. Transportation is provided by the Longhai (Lianyungang - Lanzhou) and Baocheng (Baoji - Chengdu) railways, the roads between Xi'an and Hanzhong, and water transport mainly on the Han River, but many areas are inconvenient. In addition to rice, wheat, foxtail millet, cotton, and silk thread, the country produces tung oil, raw lacquer, and medicinal materials, and livestock farming is also thriving. It has abundant reserves of petroleum, coal, and iron. Modern industry developed after the Second Sino-Japanese War, with spinning, machinery, chemistry, metallurgy, flour milling, and tanning being carried out, and handicrafts such as papermaking, silk weaving, and ceramics being produced.
