A lake in southern Florida, USA. It has an area of about 1,800 km2, is 40 km wide and 55 km long, and is 4.6 m deep at its deepest point. It is the largest freshwater lake in the southern United States. The Kissimmee River flows into the lake from the north, and the lake water flows out into the Gulf of Mexico via the Caloosahatchee River. During the rainy season, water often overflows the surrounding areas, causing flooding. Many drainage channels have been constructed to prevent flooding and to reclaim the Everglades wetlands that extend to the south of the lake. However, as a result, the amount of water flowing from Lake Okeechobee into the Everglades has decreased, causing problems in the Everglades such as salinization and destruction of the ecosystem.
