One of the early French Gothic architectural styles. Also called the Angevin style. It was practiced in western France, especially in the Anjou region, under the rule of the Plantagenet dynasty. It originated from an English style, with cross ribs higher than wall arches or transverse arches, and a dome-shaped ceiling. There is no emphasis on a sense of elevation, as in northern French Gothic. It has a single nave or a hallenkirche style, with the nave and left and right aisles at the same height. It also often lacks an ambulatory, flying buttresses, or buttresses. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
