The Boy's Own Paper

[Europe and the US]
In the second half of the 18th century in Europe, with the development of science and technology and economic growth, there was an active movement to widely and regularly disseminate reading material that had previously been written only for the education of children of a certain class. In England, G. Marshall founded the Juvenile Magazine (1788), and in the 19th century, excellent children's magazines such as The Children's Friend (1825-1860s), Boy's Own Magazine (1855-1874), and The Boy's Own Paper (1879-1912) were launched and continued to be published. Following this example, France published a series of magazines, the most famous of which was Le Magasin d'Éducation et de Récréation (Magazine of Education and Recreation) published in 1864 by the famous editor Pierre Jules Hetzel, in which such great writers as Balzac, Daudet, Dumas, Hugo, and Verne published masterpieces for children that will be remembered for generations to come.
