Also called energetics. A scientific idea advocated by German chemist FW Ostwald in the late 19th century, which was influential until the beginning of the 20th century. It takes the position that all natural phenomena should be explained by the movement of energy and the transformation of its form. It was in opposition to atomic theory, but gradually lost its position after J. Perrin determined the Avogadro number from his observations of Brownian motion in the early 20th century, and this was accepted by the academic community at the time as conclusive evidence of the existence of molecules.
