A cultivated biennial plant of the Brassicaceae family. The stems and leaves that shoot up in early spring are pickled and eaten, and the seeds are used to make mustard oil and mustard. It has already been recorded in Japan in the "Honsho Wamei," indicating that it was introduced there a long time ago. The plant is upright with few leaves, and the young leaves, stems, and undersides of the leaves have bristles. The leaves are oblong or oval with notches on the edges. The leaves are greenish brown in color, and the flowers are small and bright yellow. It is adaptable to a wide range of soils, preferring suitably wet areas, making it suitable for cultivation as a second crop in paddy fields.
