The second largest general electric manufacturer in the United States after General Electric (GE). Abbreviated as WH. Headquartered in Pittsburgh. Founded in January 1886 by inventor G. Westinghouse, who foresaw the future potential of AC power distribution. In the fall of the same year, the company established the first AC central power station in Buffalo to compete with Edison's DC system, proving the superiority of AC. By 1991, the company had 350 power stations using AC systems, securing a firm position in the industry. In communications, the company lagged behind its longtime rival GE, but in 1917 it established a subsidiary, the International Radio Telegraph Company (later one of the companies that would become RCA), and produced wireless equipment for the Allied forces during World War I.

ゼネラル･エレクトリック社(GE)に次ぐアメリカ第2位の総合電機メーカー。略称WH。本社ピッツバーグ。発明家G.ウェスティングハウスが，交流配電の将来性を予見して1886年1月に創立。エジソン社の直流方式に対抗して同年秋に最初の交流中央発電所をバッファローに設立し，交流の優位性を立証した。91年には同社の交流システムによる発電所数は350にのぼり，業界内に確たる位置を占めた。通信関係では古くからのライバルGEに立ち遅れていたが，1917年に子会社の国際ラジオ電信会社(のちにアールシーエー(RCA)の母体の一つとなる)を設立し，第1次大戦中連合軍のために無線設備を製作。
