A city in central Nagano Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1907. It occupies the central Matsumoto Basin and mountainous areas on the east and west. The city center, located on the alluvial fan of the Metoba River and the Susuki River, was called Fukashi in the old days and was the location of the Shinano Kokufu (provincial capital) of the Shinano region. It is the central city in the western and southern parts of the prefecture and developed as a strategic location where the castle town of Matsumoto Castle (the castle tower is a national treasure) and the Nishi, Nomugi, Zenkoji, and Itoigawa highways converged. It is the junction of the Shinonoi Line and the Oito Line, and the starting point of the Matsumoto Electric Railway. It was designated a new industrial city in 1964, and in 1988 the Nagano Expressway was opened from Okaya City, directly connecting it to the Chuo Expressway. Industries such as electrical equipment, food, general machinery, and chemicals have developed, and the city has the second highest manufacturing shipment value in the prefecture at 543.9 billion yen (2003). Apples and grapes are also grown. Shinshu University, Kaichi School (an important cultural property) opened in 1876, and Utsukushigahara are located in the east. The western part is part of the Northern Alps, with Japan's most famous high mountains such as Mt. Hotaka and Mt. Norikura, and Kamikochi, famous for its scenic beauty. There are many hot springs such as Asama Onsen near the center and Shirahone Onsen and Nakanoyu Onsen in the Norikura volcanic belt in the west. In parts of the central city, streetscapes from the Edo and Meiji periods remain, and there are many storehouse-style shops displaying traditional crafts such as folk furniture, making it a tourist city with a calm landscape. Matsumoto Airport, located at the southern end of the city, was completed in October 1993 to be converted to a jet airport, and is connected to Sapporo, Osaka, Fukuoka, and other cities. The Awa Tunnel leads to Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, which is located to the west. In April 2005, Shiga Village in Higashichikuma District, Naka Village in Minamiazumi District, Azumi Village, and Azusagawa Village in Minamiazumi District were incorporated, and in March 2010, Hata Town in Higashichikuma District was incorporated. 978.47km2 . 243,037 people (2010). →Related topicsShinshu University Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
