Karl [IV] - Karl
Holy Roman Emperor (reigned 1355-1378), King of Germany and King of Bohemia (reigned 1346-1378). Son of King John of Bohemia. In 1346, he was chosen as the rival king to Emperor Louis IV. He was crowned in 1355, and in 1356 he issued the Golden Bull and improved the country. He achieved the return of the Pope to Rome from his Avignon captivity. He brought economic prosperity and cultural flourishing to Bohemia, and the political center of the empire shifted to the east.
