The capital of Massa Carrara Province in Tuscany, central Italy. Population: 66,097 (2001 census preliminary figure). Located at the foot of the Apuan Alps, it is a major producer of marble in Italy. With the development of the Avenza industrial district in neighboring Carrara, machinery and chemical industries have been developing here since 1938. It is a distribution center for agricultural products. Marina di Massa, a beach facing the Ligurian Sea, is located 5 kilometers southwest, and the urban area has expanded into the surrounding area in recent years.
