Massa - Massa (English spelling)

The capital of Massa Carrara Province in Tuscany, central Italy. Population: 66,097 (2001 census preliminary figure). Located at the foot of the Apuan Alps, it is a major producer of marble in Italy. With the development of the Avenza industrial district in neighboring Carrara, machinery and chemical industries have been developing here since 1938. It is a distribution center for agricultural products. Marina di Massa, a beach facing the Ligurian Sea, is located 5 kilometers southwest, and the urban area has expanded into the surrounding area in recent years.

イタリア中部、トスカナ州マッサ・カッラーラ県の県都。人口6万6097（2001国勢調査速報値）。アプアーナ・アルプス山脈の麓(ふもと)に位置し、イタリアにおける大理石の代表的産地。隣のカッラーラにあるアベンツァ工業地区の発展に伴い、1938年以降、機械や化学工業が展開する。農産物の集散地。南西5キロメートルにリグリア海に面する海水浴場マリーナ・ディ・マッサMarina di Massaがあるが、近年その周辺まで市街地が拡大している。
