Closely related to it are spearmint (Mentha arvensis) and peppermint (Mentha piperita) (illustration), both native to Central Europe, and pennyroyal mint ( M. pulegium L.), native to Western Asia and used in cooking. [Medicinal]
The whole plant or leaves of the above-ground parts of mint contain essential oils, the main component of which is l -menthol, mostly free, some of which is esters such as acetic acid, as well as monoterpenes and the bitter component piperitone.
