Born: December 8, 1730 in Breda Died: September 7, 1799. Bowood, Wiltshire. Dutch physiologist and physician. Studied at the Catholic University of Leuven and the University of Leiden, and opened a practice in London (1765-68). Later lived in Vienna as physician to the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa (72-79). In 1779 he returned to England. His reputation as a physician was enhanced by his skill in vaccination. J. Priestley had already discovered that plants could purify the air, but Ingenhuis furthered this discovery, showing that only the green parts of plants purify the air, and that this requires light (79). He is also known for inventing a large electrostatic generator (66) and for his quantitative research into the thermal conductivity of metals (89). His main work is Experiments on Plants (79).
