Japanese: 松阪[市] - まつさか
Matsusaka [city] - Matsusaka
A city in central Mie Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1933. The eastern part of the city is the Ise Plain, where the Kushida River and other rivers flow, and faces Ise Bay. The central city developed as a castle town after Gamo Ujisato built Matsusaka Castle in 1588, and during the Edo period it became part of the Kishu Wakayama Domain. It was a post town on the Sangu Kaido road and a commercial town for Matsusaka merchants dealing in Matsusaka cotton. In addition to the textile industry that emerged in the mid-Meiji period, lumber and woodworking are also carried out, and in the 1960s, industrial parks for chemicals, machinery, etc. were established in the coastal and inland areas, and in 1994 the Matsusaka Core Industrial Park also began operations. The city is served by the Kisei Main Line, Meisho Line, Kintetsu Yamada Line, Osaka Line, Nagoya Line, and the Ise Expressway. Rice farming, vegetable and tea cultivation, and Matsusaka beef farming are thriving in the surrounding area. The castle ruins are Matsusaka Park. Within the park are the former home of Motoori Norinaga (special historic site), his grave (historic site), and Takarazuka Kofun (historic site). The old streetscape has been preserved, and there is also a history and folklore museum. The area around Kahada Gorge upstream of the Kushida River belongs to Muro-Akame Aoyama Quasi-National Park. In January 2005, Ureshino Town, Mikumo Town, Iinan Town, and Iitaka Town in Ichishi County were incorporated. 623.66 km2 . Population: 168,017 (2010).
