Located in Uppsala, Sweden, Uppsala University is the oldest university in Scandinavia. It was founded in 1477. It was temporarily closed due to religious strife at the end of the 16th century, but was re-established as a Protestant university in 1595. It developed particularly during the reign of Gustavus Adolphus II in the early 17th century, when it established itself as one of Europe's leading universities. In the 1960s, Sweden underwent university reforms, with efforts being made to regionalize universities and make admissions policies more flexible, but Uppsala University has always maintained a conservative stance. As a result, it has been overtaken by Stockholm University and Lund University in terms of size, but in terms of research level it remains at the top of the country. As of 1999, the university has seven faculties: the Faculty of Theology, which has existed since the medieval era, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Letters (Historical Philosophy, Linguistics), the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Science and Engineering (Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Earth Science, Chemistry), and the Faculty of Pharmacy. It also has an internationally renowned Earthquake Research Institute as an affiliated facility. There are approximately 1,800 faculty members and 28,000 students.
