A band made up of several types of steel drums and percussion instruments. A steel drum is a musical instrument made by striking a drum can with a ridged top, which produces a different pitch when struck. There are high and low pitch versions. It was invented by black people in Trinidad during World War II using drums discarded by the U.S. Air Force. Today, it is a specialty of the island, and many steel bands parade through the streets, especially during carnival. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
