A unit of length. It is one thousandth of a millimeter. Its symbol is μ. It is believed to have been in use already around 1890. The symbol is said to have appeared in a report by the British Ministry of Trade in 1895. The name was abolished at the General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1968, and was replaced by micrometer (μm). The name micron has also been excluded from Japan's legal measurement units.
