Land lease - Jigari

During the Edo period, this mainly referred to renting land in cities, and the people who rented that land. To rent land, a written land lease signed by a guarantor called a jiukenin was required, and the jishi (land rent) was often set as an annual amount, to be paid in two installments or monthly. The landlord had strong rights, and if the tenant failed to pay the jishi, he could demand the land be vacated (jiake, jitate) at any time. In the household register, it was usually clearly stated that the tenant was a land renter, and along with tanagari (shop renters), they were not officially recognized as townspeople.

江戸時代におもに都市で土地を借りること、またその土地を借りた人をいう。土地の借用にあたっては、地請人(じうけにん)とよばれる保証人の連署した地請証文を必要とし、地子(じし)（地代）は年額で定められる場合が多く、それを二季に分けて支払うか、あるいは毎月払いで納めることになっていた。地主の権利は強く、地借人が地子を怠納すると、いつでも土地の明け渡し（地明(じあけ)、地立(じたて)）を要求することができたという。人別帳には普通、地借であることが明記され、店借(たながり)とともに正式の町人とは認められなかった。
