One of Myanmar's seven divisions. Located in the mid-west of the country at latitudes 18°-23°N and longitudes 93°-96°E, it borders Sagaing Division to the north, Mandalay Division to the east, Pegu Division to the south, Chin State to the northwest, and Arakan State to the southwest. It has an area of 44,200 km2 and a population of 4.07 million (1994). Its capital is Magway City on the left bank of the Irrawaddy River. The Irrawaddy River runs through it from north to south, with five tributaries, Yaw, Salin, Mon, Man, and Mindon, flowing in from the west, and two tributaries, Inn and Pyin, flowing in from the east. Annual precipitation is low, at 850 mm in Gangaw, 660 mm in Chauk, and 660 mm in Pakokku, so irrigated rice cultivation is practiced in the river basin, and field crops are cultivated in other areas.
