Uragami clan

Japanese:
Uragami clan

A local feudal lord whose main residence was Urakami Sho in Isei County, Harima Province (Hyogo Prefecture). As the Akamatsu clan grew as shugo daimyo (military governor) during and after the Nanboku-cho period, the Urakami clan gradually developed politically as their powerful vassal. In 1367 (Shohei 22, Joji 6), Urakami Yukikage was recognized as the deputy shugo of Akamatsu Norisuke, the shugo of Bizen Province (Okayama Prefecture), and the clan continued to hold the position of deputy shugo of the province, with eastern Bizen becoming an important base for the clan. In 1437 (Eikyō 9), Urakami Saburo was recognized as the inspector-magistrate of Harima Province, but he also served as the deputy shugo under Akamatsu Mitsusuke, the shugo who was also the shoshi of the samurai dokoro. After the restoration of the Akamatsu clan as shugo, Uragami Norimune's political status was extremely high, and he provided fundamental support for the control of the domain, and the clan's influence grew exponentially. In 1502 (Bunki 2), Norimune died. His successor, Shishi Muramune, pursued the shugo Akamatsu Yoshimura in 1520 (Eisho 17) and established control over Harima, Bizen, and Mimasaka (Okayama Prefecture), but became involved in political strife at the center and was killed in battle in 1531 (Kyoroku 4). This marked the end of the Uragami clan's growth as a daimyo.
