A port city in eastern Madagascar, southeast of Africa. It is also called Toamasina. It faces the Indian Ocean. Population: 137,782 (1993 census), 169,800 (2002 estimate). The city is located on a sandy peninsula, and has a variety of industries, including agricultural product processing. It is connected to the inland capital, Antananarivo, by rail. About half of Madagascar's total trade value is imported and exported through this port. The main exports are coffee, vanilla, and cloves, while the imports are oil, capital goods, and consumer goods.
