…After studying at a high school in Caen, Normandy, and studying at universities in Giessen and Marburg in Germany for about a year, he took the examination for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' consular affairs, which was clearly distinguished from higher-ranking positions at the time, and came to Japan as an interpreter at the age of 21 in 1904 (Meiji 37), where he worked for about 30 years. His academic talent was beloved by Ambassador Elliot and others, and he published Japan, a Short Cultural History in 1931. This remains the standard work on Japanese history written in English. …
