John Phillips Marquand

John Phillips Marquand
1893‐1960
American author. He grew up in the upper class of the Boston area from childhood, and after graduating from Harvard University, he started writing while working for a newspaper company, initially writing many dime novels. His most notable works were a series of detective stories about a Japanese private detective named Mr. Moto. After he published The Late George Appley in 1937 and won the Pulitzer Prize, he became recognized as a writer of pure literature. This was a fine comedy of manners that skillfully satirized the life of a typical Boston businessman and his family in the form of a biography, and he went on to publish many similar works, including Wickford Point (1939) and B.F.'s Daughter (1946).
