1893‐1960 American author. He grew up in the upper class of the Boston area from childhood, and after graduating from Harvard University, he started writing while working for a newspaper company, initially writing many dime novels. His most notable works were a series of detective stories about a Japanese private detective named Mr. Moto. After he published The Late George Appley in 1937 and won the Pulitzer Prize, he became recognized as a writer of pure literature. This was a fine comedy of manners that skillfully satirized the life of a typical Boston businessman and his family in the form of a biography, and he went on to publish many similar works, including Wickford Point (1939) and B.F.'s Daughter (1946). 1893‐1960 アメリカの作家。
