A revival movement. A phenomenon or movement that rekindles religious spirit and faith, mainly in Christianity. When church life and faith have become formalized or dogmatic and degenerate into mere customs and ceremonies, or when believers have abandoned faith and become secularized and live unrelated to religion, it refers to evangelism, especially in the form of mass evangelism, that denounces unbelief and sin, urges repentance, and returns people to religion and faith. A typical example of this is the so-called "Great Awakening" that occurred in New England in the early 18th century, which began with the preaching of J. Edwards and G. Whitefield, and revived Puritanism, which was being lost in the secularized colonies, and re-established religion. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
