Swallowtail - Kiageha (English spelling)

This butterfly belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Papilionidae. It is found in North Africa, Europe, East Asia, and even in northern America, and is the species with the widest distribution among the Papilio genus. In Japan, it is common in areas from the Tokara Islands north to Hokkaido. Its wingspan is about 90-120 mm. Its markings are similar to those of the common swallowtail, but the ground color of its wings is generally yellowish, and it is easily distinguished by the lack of stripes on the inner chamber of the forewings. It appears once a year in cold regions, and usually two or three times a year in warm regions. While most Papilio species are forest-dwelling, this species prefers grasslands and flies swiftly over them. Its larvae feed on various Umbelliferae plants, wild plants, and planted carrots, mitsuba, parsley, and celery, so it is sometimes considered a pest. It sometimes appears on Rutaceae plants.

昆虫綱鱗翅(りんし)目アゲハチョウ科に属するチョウ。北アフリカ、ヨーロッパから東アジアにかけて、さらにアメリカ北部に分布し、アゲハ属Papilioのなかではもっとも広い分布圏をもつ種である。日本では吐噶喇(とから)列島以北、北海道まで各地に普通。はねの開張90～120ミリメートル程度。普通のナミアゲハに斑紋(はんもん)がよく似ているが、一般にはねの地色は黄色みが強く、前ばね表面の中室に条がないことによって容易に見分けられる。寒冷地では年1回、暖地では通常年2、3回の発生。多くのアゲハ属の種が森林性であるのに対して、本種は草地を好み、その上を敏活に飛ぶ。幼虫の食草は各種のセリ科植物、野生のもののほか、植栽されたニンジン、ミツバ、パセリ、セロリなどを食害するので害虫とされることもある。ときにミカン科植物にもつく。
