Brown sole (English name: brown sole)

Japanese: マガレイ(真鰈) - マガレイ（英語表記）brown sole

A marine fish of the family Pleuronectidae (illustration). A northern species found from Hokkaido to northern Honshu. The eyed side is light brown with no markings, while the eyeless side is white with a slightly broad, light yellow edge on the dorsal and anal fins. It is morphologically very similar to the marbled flounder, but can be distinguished by the lack of scales between the eyes. It is also larger than the marbled flounder. The spawning season is from March to June, when it lays separate pelagic eggs measuring 0.8 to 0.9 mm in diameter. A clutch can contain 3,000 to 100,000 eggs. They hatch in about six days at a water temperature of 6 to 10°C.

カレイ目カレイ科の海産魚（イラスト）。北海道から本州北部に分布する北方種。有眼側は淡褐色で斑紋はなく，無眼側は白色で背びれ，しりびれの縁辺部がやや幅広く淡黄色である。形態はマコガレイによく似ているが，両眼の間にうろこのないことで区別できる。また，マコガレイより大型になる。産卵期は3～6月で，卵径0.8～0.9mmの分離浮性卵を産む。1腹の卵数は3000～10万に達する。水温6～10℃において約6日で孵化（ふか）する。
