Magar (English spelling)

Japanese: マガル（英語表記）Magar

A people whose native land is the mountainous areas at altitudes of 1,200 to 2,500 meters in central and western Nepal. Population: approximately 290,000 (language population in 1971, likely less than the actual population). Many have now forgotten Magar, a Tibeto-Burman language, and speak Nepali. They live in villages surrounded by arable land and pastures, and grow corn, finger millet, wheat, and rice (in the lower areas), and raise cattle, goats, and sheep. Many become mercenaries in the British and Indian armies (so-called Gurkha soldiers), or serve in the Nepalese Army.

ネパール中央部から西部にかけての標高1200～2500mの山地付近を故地とする人々。人口約29万(1971年の言語人口。実人口より少ないと思われる)。現在ではチベット･ビルマ語派系のマガル語を忘れ，ネパール語を使う人が多い。まわりに耕地，牧場をもつ集村に住み，トウモロコシ，シコクビエ，小麦，水稲(低部で)などを作り，牛，ヤギ，羊などを飼う。イギリス軍，インド軍の傭兵(いわゆるグルカ兵)，ネパール国軍人になる人も多い。
