Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A painter-monk active in the early Kamakura period (first half of the 13th century). He went by the name of Enitsubo. He was a disciple of Myoe Shonin at Kosanji Temple in Kyoto, and according to sources such as the Kosanji Engi, he is known to have painted many pictures related to the temple, including portraits of the monk. The "Myoe Shonin Zen Meditation on a Tree" in the temple's collection is said to be the work of Jonin, and is a masterpiece that captures the upright character of Myoe, who led a sincere religious life. In addition, the Genkyo scroll of the Kegon Sect Founder Illustrated Scroll (owned by Kosanji Temple) is also thought to have been painted by Jonin. In the inscription, Myoe wrote "the monk Enitsubo Jonin, who stayed at the same inn," and Jonin copied out Buddhist scriptures, which shows that Jonin was not just a painter but a painter-monk. <References> Hirata Hiroshi, "The World of Myoe: The Cases of Enitsubo Jonin and Shunga" (Annual Philosophy Journal, No. 34) (Arata Yajima) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
