Ninja - Jounin

Japanese: 成忍 - じょうにん

Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A painter-monk active in the early Kamakura period (first half of the 13th century). He went by the name of Enitsubo. He was a disciple of Myoe Shonin at Kosanji Temple in Kyoto, and according to sources such as the Kosanji Engi, he is known to have painted many pictures related to the temple, including portraits of the monk. The "Myoe Shonin Zen Meditation on a Tree" in the temple's collection is said to be the work of Jonin, and is a masterpiece that captures the upright character of Myoe, who led a sincere religious life. In addition, the Genkyo scroll of the Kegon Sect Founder Illustrated Scroll (owned by Kosanji Temple) is also thought to have been painted by Jonin. In the inscription, Myoe wrote "the monk Enitsubo Jonin, who stayed at the same inn," and Jonin copied out Buddhist scriptures, which shows that Jonin was not just a painter but a painter-monk. <References> Hirata Hiroshi, "The World of Myoe: The Cases of Enitsubo Jonin and Shunga" (Annual Philosophy Journal, No. 34)

生年：生没年不詳
鎌倉前期(13世紀前半)に活躍した画僧。恵日房と号す。京都高山寺の明恵上人の弟子で,『高山寺縁起』などによれば,上人像をはじめ同寺にかかわる多くの絵を描いたことが知られる。同寺所蔵の「明恵上人樹上坐禅図」も成忍の作と伝えるが,真摯な宗教生活を送った明恵の清廉な人柄を描き留めた傑作である。ほかに「華厳宗祖師絵巻」の元暁の巻(高山寺蔵)も成忍の筆とみられる。明恵が賛文中に「同宿沙門恵日房成忍」と記したり,成忍が経典の書写を行った例などは,成忍が単なる絵師でなく画僧というべき存在であったことを示している。<参考文献>平田寛「明恵の周辺―恵日房成忍と俊賀の場合―」(『哲学年報』34号)
