Kitaaizu [village] - Kitaaizu

Japanese: 北会津[村] - きたあいづ

A village in Kitaaizu County, in the mid-west of Fukushima Prefecture. Population 7,652 (1995). Located in the southern Aizu Basin, the Agagawa River (Okawa River) flows on the eastern border and the Miyagawa River (Tsurunuma River) flows on the western border. The entire village area is contained within the gently sloping alluvial fan of the two rivers, and the village has long been plagued by flooding by the Agagawa River. Until the Middle Ages, the Agagawa River flowed along the current Tsurunuma River, which is the county border with Onuma County. The difference in elevation within the village area is only 42 meters, and it is a flat rice paddy area, making it one of the most productive areas in the Aizu Basin. It is adjacent to Aizuwakamatsu City across the Agagawa River, and as a suburban agricultural area, the cultivation of vegetables, flowers, and fruit is thriving, but commerce is not thriving.

福島県中西部，北会津郡の村。人口7652(1995)。会津盆地南部に位置し，東境を阿賀川(大川)，西境を宮川(鶴沼川)が流れる。両河川の緩やかな扇状地面に全村域が含まれ，古くから阿賀川のはんらんに悩まされてきた。中世までは阿賀川が現在の鶴沼川筋を流れていたため，ここが大沼郡との郡境となっている。村域の標高差は42mにすぎず，平たんな水田地帯で，会津盆地でも収量の多い地域である。阿賀川を隔てて会津若松市に隣接し，近郊農業地帯として野菜，花卉，果物の栽培も盛んだが，商業はふるわない。
