The original meaning of the term was the inhabitants of the Phanar district of Istanbul (called Fener in Turkish, meaning lighthouse), but since many of the Greek merchant aristocrats who emerged in the second half of the 17th century lived in Fanar, centering around the Eastern Orthodox Patriarchate, the term came to refer specifically to this newly emerging class of aristocrats. There are about ten representative families (such as the Mavrokordatos, Morgis, Ypsilandis, Szos, Hangerlis, Callimakis, and Ghikas), who made their fortunes mainly through East-West trade, but not all of them were of Greek origin.
