Red-yellow soil

Japanese: 赤黄色土 - せきおうしょくど（英語表記）red-yellow soil

This is the taxonomic name for soils with red or yellow subsoils that are widely distributed in the low mountains, hills, and alluvial plateaus of southwestern Japan. It was named by Ichiro Kanno (1961). They are further divided into red soil group and yellow soil group based on the difference in the color tone of the subsoil, and the difference between the two is based on the quality of local internal drainage and the quantity and quality of iron-bearing minerals contained in the parent rock. However, apart from the difference in the color tone of the subsoil, they have very similar physicochemical properties as described below, and because the red soil group and the yellow soil group are distributed geographically adjacent to each other, they have been grouped together as a soil type called red-yellow soil.

西南日本の低山･丘陵･洪積台地上に広く分布している赤色または黄色の下層土をもつ土壌の分類学的名称で，菅野一郎によって命名(1961)された。下層土の色調のちがいによって赤色土群と黄色土群に細分され，両者の相違は局部的な内部排水の良否や母岩に含まれる含鉄鉱物の量質の差にもとづくものとされた。しかし下層土の色調の相違以外には下記のようなきわめて類似した理化学的性質をもち，しかも赤色土群と黄色土群は地理的に隣接して分布するので，赤黄色土という土壌型として一括された。
