Japanese: マイルカ(真海豚) - マイルカ（英語表記）common dolphin

A mammal of the family Delphinidae in the suborder Odontoceti (Odontoceti). Also known as the slippery dolphin. A beautiful, long-beaked open-ocean dolphin found in temperate to tropical regions around the world. Traditionally, common dolphins were considered to consist of only one species, D. delphis , but recently they are often divided into two species, D. delphis and D. capensis . In the waters off Japan, they are found in the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea, and the Pacific Ocean south of the Kii Peninsula. It is presumed that the one with the longer snout corresponds to the latter, and that the one with the shorter snout that is found in the Pacific Ocean from Shikoku to Hokkaido corresponds to the former, but more detailed research is awaited.

ハクジラ亜目マイルカ科の哺乳類（イラスト）。ハセイルカとも呼ばれる。世界中の温帯～熱帯に分布するくちばしの長い美しい外洋性のイルカ。従来マイルカはマイルカD.delphis一種よりなるとされていたが，最近はこれをマイルカD.delphisとハセイルカD.capensisの2種に分けることが多い。日本近海では日本海と東シナ海，紀伊半島以南の太平洋に分布し，吻が長い方が後者に該当し，四国～北海道にかけての太平洋に分布する吻の短い方が前者にあたると推定されているが，詳細な研究が待たれる。
